Standing Alone

Have you ever been in a group where you knew that your moral compass was pointing entirely north of everybody else in the group? Y’all are all standing there together, and discussion is going around about some thing or the other. And EVERYBODY agrees…except you. What now?

SOMETIMES, there is wisdom in keeping your mouth shut, and obviously, that depends on the circumstances. (One of my favorite quotes from Mark Twain says, “It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.”) Not everybody is entitled to your opinion, and many times, frankly, it doesn’t matter. But there are other times when we are called to be bold in our faith and STAND UP, even if that means we stand alone.

When Ahab, the King of Israel was trying to convince Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, to go to war alongside him, Jehoshaphat insisted that they consult the prophets first. The two of them went down to the threshing floor, sat on their thrones, and listened to the prophets. (I’m tellin’ y’all, the threshing floor was a happenin’ place. If you are unfamiliar with the concept of the threshing floor, go here and read about it.) ALLLLLLL of the prophets said the same thing. All four hundred of them. They all prophesied that Ahab and Jehoshaphat would be triumphant. “Attack and be victorious, for the Lord will give it into the king’s hand.” But Jehoshaphat knew that those guys were blowing smoke up the kings’ royal robes. He was looking for a REAL prophet of God.  He said, “Is there no longer a prophet of the Lord here whom we can inquire of?” (1Kings 22:7) So they called Micaiah, who was known for prophesying what God gave him, and NOT what the king wanted to hear. Sure enough, Micaiah told them that if they went to war, Israel Standing Alongwould be scattered like sheep without a shepherd, and that Ahab would die (1Kings 22:17-28). Micaiah stood and said what he knew to be true, even though he knew it wouldn’t be popular. And it wasn’t.  In fact, one of the other prophets slapped him and Ahab had him locked up and given only bread and water. But, even then, he stood his ground. One man against four hundred.

Would you have had the boldness to do what Micaiah did?

Could you be the ONE voice in four hundred?

We like to think we would. We like to think that we would stand up and declare what the Lord says is true, even if we are the only one doing it. But, when the rubber meets the road, it’s not as easy as it sounds. Folks today seem to think they are being so “rebellious” and “free-thinking” in their beliefs, but they are just echoing what they hear around them. The real test comes when it’s just you and what you know to be God’s truth. It’s in that moment when you have to decide if you are going to parrot what is going on around you, or be courageous and audacious and make your voice heard through the noise of the world.

Make your mind up now, because the time is coming.

1 Corinthians 15:58 ESV   Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

Joshua 1:9 ESV   Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
