Freedom

Freedom!!  That word, for many in this country, is very emotional. It conjures up mental images of all those who have fought and died for, and continue to fight and die for, our freedom, both at home and abroad. I think of flags and soldiers and families. I think of the sacrifices of people I know, and other people, most whom I will never know. I think of times that are becoming rarer these days, when the people of this great nation are standing shoulder to shoulder as Americans and nothing else. I’m sure each of you have images of your own that come to mind when you hear the word “FREEDOM.” But do you think of Jesus? I will admit, out of all the strong, emotional, and patriotic thoughts that I have about the word “Freedom,” I’m not sure that any of them have anything to do with Jesus, at least not initially. Shouldn’t those be our first thoughts though? This country that we love so dearly was founded on the gospel of Jesus Christ and the notion that we should be free to worship Him.

Where does REAL freedom come from? Isn’t freedom found in Christ? We enjoy so many physical freedoms in this country, that we sometimes tend to forget about the spiritual freedom we have in Christ. The Word says that the Spirit gives us liberty.

2 Corinthians 3:17 KJV   Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

I also like how the Message Bible puts it: 2 Corinthians 3:17-18

They suddenly recognize that God is a living, personal presence, not a piece of chiseled stone. And when God is personally present, a living Spirit, that old, constricting legislation is recognized as obsolete. We’re free of it!

All of us! Nothing between us and God, our faces shining with the brightness of His face. And so we are transfigured much like the Messiah, our lives gradually become brighter and more beautiful as God enters our lives and we become like Him.

Through Christ, we are free of sin, and we have the liberty to choose to be free of all the things that weigh us down. We can leave the doubt, the anger, the pride, jealousy, unbelief, hate, lust, fear – all of it – at the foot of the cross. And He WANTS to take it from us. He WANTS us to stop carrying it around with us like the proverbial monkey on our back. It weighs on us and steals our energy and our joy. He longs for us to have the freedom that he purchased for us with His very lifeblood.

Freedom is a decision. It’s a choice. Just like when we came to Jesus, it’s something we have to CHOOSE to receive. It’s already been provided for us. Freedom and liberty to be WHAT and WHOM God has created us to be is a gift from an extravagant God. All we have to do is accept it. The Word tells us that He has come to give LIBERTY to the captives (Luke 4:18). So whatever has held you captive — He has the key. So many times, even as Christians, we allow things to hold us hostage when the WORD SAYS we are free. Are we spending our lives sitting in unlocked jail cells, y’all?  Do we think we have to be there – not knowing that all we have to do is get up and walk out?

EXERCISE YOUR FREEDOM!! Tell the enemy you’ve had enough, and he can take the guilt and oppression he has tried to lay on you and stick it in his ear! Because IT’S NOT YOURS ANYMORE! Jesus paid for it.  So let Him have it!  Give it to Him to get rid of! Often we are footing the bill on something that we don’t owe for! Jesus PAID IN FULL. Quit struggling to make the payments on that mess and LET IT GET REPOSSESSED AND GO BACK to where it came from! If you are a Believer, you know the TRUTH (Jesus says He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life – John 14:6). You know Him PERSONALLY and intimately, and the Word says THE TRUTH will set you FREE!  And when the Son sets you free, you are FREE INDEED!!

John 8:31-32 BSB    So He said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 8:34-36 BSB    Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Galatians 5:13 BSB    For you, brothers, were called to freedom; but do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh. Rather, serve one another in love.
