Most folks have heard of Jezebel, but do you know her story? The scriptures talk about her in 1st and 2nd Kings. She was married to Ahab, the king of Israel. The Word says (1 Kings 16:30) that Ahab did more evil than all of the other kings before him. (There’s a claim to fame.) Before she married and became queen, Jezebel had been a princess. Her father was not only the king of the Sidonians, but he was a priest of Baal. Ahab and Jezebel set up temples and altars to Baal and a pole for the worship of Asherah, a fertility goddess who was worshipped alongside Baal.
Jezebel was known for her evil. The scriptures show her as a murderer, a liar, and a manipulator. She also clearly had some control issues, y’all. When Naboth, the owner of a vineyard near the palace, refused to sell the land to Ahab (because it was family land that had been passed down for generations) Jezebel had him set up (framed) and stoned to death (1 Kings Chapter 21). Then she had his sons stoned to death so that there wouldn’t be any heirs, (2 Kings 9:25-26.) All this because Ahab wanted to use the space for a vegetable garden and Jezebel was mad that Naboth told Ahab “No.” I’d say ol’ girl had BIG control issues, wouldn’t you? She was also known for sexual immorality and idol worship. Child sacrifice and sex were often used in the worship rituals of Baal and Asherah, and she was knee-deep in all of that. You can read all about the ugliness that was a part of the rule of Ahab and Jezebel in 1st Kings.
Fast forward to Ahab’s death (1 Kings 22:36-37) and you would think that they would have seized that opportunity to get rid of Mean Girl, but they didn’t. She just kind of faded away for a while. We don’t hear much else from her until 2nd Kings chapter 9 when God told Elisha to anoint Jehu as king over Israel. When that happened, Jehu immediately went to Jezreel and started CLEANING HOUSE. He was ON IT!! When the lookout in the city saw the chariots coming in the distance, he wasn’t sure who it was, but he said, “The driving is like that of Jehu son of Nimshi – he drives like a maniac.” (There is another claim to fame for you – when everybody in the countryside knows you by your crazy driving!) Jehu arrived in Jezreel and killed Joram, the son of Jezebel, as well as Joram’s buddy Ahaziah, king of Judah (both of whom were evil according to the Word.) Next stop, Jezzie’s house.
I guess Jezebel figured if she was going to go toe to toe with Jehu, she intended to look good doing it. She went and put on her makeup and fixed her hair, then she stood in the window and hollered down at Jehu. She was taunting him. She called, “Have you come in peace, you Zimri, you murderer of your master?” Zimri was king over Israel for only 7 days, so she was telling him he wouldn’t be in power for very long. But Jehu didn’t miss a beat. He looked up to the window and shouted, “Hey y’all! Who’s up there that’s with ME?” (This, by the way, is NOT an approved biblical translation, it’s a hillbilly overview). Two or three of the household slaves looked back down at him from the window in answer to his question. Jehu said, “Chunk her out the window!” And they did.
So there is the country girl, Reader’s Digest version of Jezebel’s life. Her name has become synonymous with sin and idol worship. Here is my question to you: Do you have any Jezebels in your life? Have you ever been to the point that you are fed up with your own sin? Have you ever been in a place where you are so DONE, that you are even sick of yourself? Do you have any idols that are being prioritized before God in your life (work, money, etc)?
Before you were saved, you had sin in your life. Then you became a Believer, and hopefully, you laid it all at the altar and got rid of it. But do you have anything that got stuck back and forgotten? Maybe the sin was like Jezebel and when it saw salvation coming it didn’t actually go away, it just got quiet and kind of hid out, hoping nobody would notice. Maybe every once in a while it dresses up pretty and sticks it’s head out the window to smirk at you, taunt and mock you. It says, “You think you are a good Christian. You think you are destroying the sin in your life. You think you have me all under control, but I’m still here and you’re not gonna stick with this new life much longer anyway.”
Have you had enough?
Take a lesson from Jehu. CHUNK IT OUT THE WINDOW.
Go to your heavenly father in prayer, confess your sin, and do whatever you have to do to get the sin out of your life. If that means you stop going to some of the places you are accustomed to going, or that you must stop hanging around some of the folks you have always been around, then do it. Do whatever it takes. Tell the devil he is a liar and then throw that mess out the window. CLEAN HOUSE.
Once you ask forgiveness and give it to God, it’s GONE. When they went back to find Jezebel’s body and bury it, they didn’t even find enough to bury and say “This is Jezebel.” It was GONE. Micah 7:18-19 says that He forgives our sins and hurls our iniquities into the depths of the sea.
Don’t we all need to open our windows and get busy cleaning?
Psalm 103:12 As far as the east is from the west, so far as he removed our transgressions from us.
