My Daddy said…

Do any of you have siblings? As a child, what was one of the most annoying things about having siblings? When they try to tell you what to do, right? What a pain in the neck when you are busy trying to do something important, (like take your doll to the doctor because she is sick, or build a town for your toy cars to live in, or bake mud pies, or rearrange Barbie’s dream house) and a brother or sister tries to walk in and tell you what do! As if! And how did you respond to that instruction? Probably the same way that siblings have been responding to each other since the days of Adam and Eve’s kids…you IGNORE them. “Whatever. I don’t have to listen to you. You’re not my Mama.”

C’mon, y’all all know what I am talking about. If you have been a kid, or had kids, or even been around kids, you have seen this. I bet if you closed your eyes you could even see it in your head right now. What we have is SOMEBODY getting a little big for their britches. Somebody is making demands that they have neither the influence or the permission to make. Somebody is disregarding the household pecking order.

The change in circumstances comes when all of a sudden one of your siblings sashays in with a smirk, their hands on their hips and they say, “MAMA said to tell YOU….” Or “DADDY said…?” THAT’S when the rubber meets the road. And you KNOW you have to listen. Why? Because it wasn’t your SISTER or your BROTHER talking, it was essentially MAMA talking. That sibling was walking in the authority that either Mama or Daddy had given them. THIS time if you ignore them, you aren’t ignoring your annoying little sister, you are ignoring your Mama…and in our house, THAT, folks, was a game-changer.

As Christians, we are children of the Most High God! And the Word says that we walk in His authority (Matthew 28:18). We are joint-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17). We are His ambassadors. When you have an ambassador for the United States (for example) going to a foreign country, they are going in the name of the US. They are representing the US and our interests. They are no longer the regular old neighbor guy from down the street, they are effectively the embodiment of the entire country for that situation. They walk in the authority of the US. So much so, in fact, that if an ambassador were to be killed it is considered an act of war.

Well y’all, if you are a Believer, if you have been saved, you walk in the authority of the King of the Universe. You walk in the authority of the one who SPOKE the world into existence. When you became a Christian, it became part of your covenant, your promise or contract, with Him. HE is IN us (1 John 4:4). We have dominion (Psalm 8:6). End of story. The trick is that we, as Believers have to learn to EXERCISE that authority. Let’s face it, you can HAVE all kinds of authority, but if you don’t employ it, it’s useless. What if you are driving down the road and some guy in pulls up beside you and motions for you to pull over? And you think to yourself, “Um, no way buddy, you could be a carjacker. Besides, I am CLEARLY in a hurry.” But if that same guy throws on some blue lights and flashes a badge in the window…well now, THAT is a different story. You pull over, roll the window down, and if you are smart and your Mama raised you right, you are polite and respectful to the officer (how you act in situations like that, by the way, even if the officer isn’t being nice, says WAY more about who you are than it says about him. But that’s a whole ‘nother story). He’s the same guy as before, but NOW he is exercising his authority. (Not that I know ANYTHING about being pulled over and given a speeding ticket. That was PURELY for purposes of illustration. *cough*)

So the upshot is this, the next time Satan or one of his little flunkies whispers in your ear that you are a loser or a screw up, that you are not worthy of anybody’s time, much less their love, or when he says that you are not worth saving and grace doesn’t apply to you, that you are weak and alone, you aren’t going to make it, and that your situation won’t ever get better, or any of the myriad of other things that the enemy likes to throw at you – DON’T LISTEN TO HIM! He has no authority in your life. He has no authority over you! Wanna see him tuck tail and run (James 4:7)? You just put your hands on your hips, sashay back up to him with a smile on your face and boldness in your heart and say, “Oh YEAH?! Well MY DADDY, my Abba Father, says that’s not true! He says I am HIS (Isaiah 43:1)! He says I am precious and loved (John 3:16), and I am bought with the blood of Jesus (Galatians 3:13), He says I am a son/daughter (1 John 3:1) of the MOST HIGH! HE says I am worthy, and I have a purpose, hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11)! And I don’t have to listen to you! You’re NOT my DADDY!”
…and if you are feeling spunky, stick your tongue out at him, just for emphasis.

Luke 9:1 ESV    And he called the 12 together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases.
