We all have wounds. Some are physical and can be seen on the outside, and some are emotional or spiritual in nature. Some are small and relatively insignificant in the long run, and some are big, big wounds that alter our lives.
A physical wound can heal on its own. Oftentimes, that sort of healing leaves a rather large ugly scar, and takes much longer than if the wound had been treated and dressed properly. Sometimes untreated wounds develop infections that compound the pain and inhibit the healing. If an infection is left untreated, it can lead to amputation and possibly sepsis (when the infection gets in the bloodstream and goes throughout the entire body) and ultimately lead to death. We treat physical wounds today with ointments, antibiotics, creams, and sometimes we even have to alter our lifestyle to bring about healing (stop smoking or control blood sugar). We clean wounds out and we wrap them up to keep them clean and prevent any germs from getting into them. By doing this we help ensure that they heal as quickly as possible, with the least amount of scarring, and the best outcome for the patient.
Emotional and spiritual wounds are harder. Sometimes they are hard to see, and even more difficult to treat. They can cause our level of faith to be low or weak. Just like a physical wound, when emotional or spiritual wounds are not tended to, they can lead to ugly scars, unwanted amputations (family or other loved ones can be cut off from us) or death. Sometimes healing our wounds means an alteration of our lifestyle. The good news is that our God, Jehovah Rapha, is The Healer. He heals our physical wounds, but thank God He heals our emotional wounds too! Even the ones that are hard to see. He is the lifter of our heads (Psalm 3:3)! Psalm 34:19 ESV says “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.” And we know that as humans, our righteousness is like filthy rags, but as Believers, we are made righteous through the blood of Jesus!
The Word says that God is near to the brokenhearted and He binds up their wounds (Psalm 147:3). Isn’t it good to know that as Christians we have the Great Physician looking after our sore spots, hurts, and wounds? He heals us! And unlike the doctor’s office where you oftentimes must wait to be seen, He sees us ANYTIME and ALL THE TIME!! He isn’t sending somebody else in to take care of it for Him either. HE cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). HE is NEAR to the brokenhearted and HE binds up their wounds. He restores! Our God makes house calls, y’all. Hallelujah! Let Him heal you!
Psalm 30:2 ESV O Lord my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me.
Jeremiah 33:6 ESV Behold, I will bring to it health and healing, and I will heal them and reveal to them abundance of prosperity and security.
