Everybody wants to perform at his or her peak. Whether you are at work, at home, at school or anywhere else, nobody wants to feel like they aren’t doing their best. “Get your head in the game,” is something we hear often in sports. You can go online and find any one of 1000 ways that promise to help you focus, whether it be a class, a book, a medication, a vitamin, or some new-fangled piece of technology. We all want to be sharp! At our best! Performing at top level!
Proverbs 27:17 ESV Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.
Do the people in your life leave you feeling sharpened, or dull and drained? While nobody is going to be a joy to behold 100% of the time, and we can’t always choose who we are with at work, or school, or social functions, or even at home, this is something we need to be aware of.
When given the opportunity to choose, we should try to be near people that sharpen us. We should try to spend time with godly people whose conversations offer wisdom, insight, encouragement, and knowledge. And we should strive to be that kind of friend, as well. I pray Proverbs 27:17 over my teenager, but over the rest of our family too. I ask the Lord to bring us IRON friends. I ask the Lord to bring us friends that keep us sharp, intelligent, and quick. The fact is, if you aren’t careful, anything you are around for a long period of time can begin to “rub off.” It becomes the norm. So when you can, avoid situations where you are dulled and blunted.
The Word says that we overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony (Revelation 12:11). Speaking well, and defending our faith with kindness, love, and intelligence (1 Peter 3:15) is SO much easier when we are sharp, and continually sharpened by our interactions with others. Staying sharp is a benefit to us. The Word is quick and sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12), and we should do our best to stand ready to wield it when the opportunity arises.
Ecclesiastes 10:10 ESV If the iron is blunt, and one does not sharpen the edge, he must use more strength, but wisdom helps one to succeed.
