Everybody likes new stuff. Even folks like me, who are lovers of vintage and antique things, consider those things “new to me” when they are acquired. And what do we many times do with old stuff, anyway? We fix it up and make it like new. We work and repair and clean and polish, so it will be all shiny and pretty again.
We just like new stuff.
Have you ever been in a place where you are feeling old and worn out? Rundown and frazzled? Where you determine in your heart that you are going to make a change, but at the end of the day you have messed up again? I sure have. The last thing you feel is “shiny and new.”
There have been days when I am deep in a battle, and it’s all I can do to just flop down across the bed and cry out to God, “I don’t have any fight left in me, Lord! And not only am I knee-deep in this huge war, I have all these small skirmishes that keep coming up and hitting me. I can’t deal with ANOTHER THING!” Have you been there?
Maybe it looks more like this: The Holy Spirit has convicted you of something and you have resolved in your heart that you are going to make a change. You are feeling good about it! You are encouraged! But by the end of the week (sometimes by the end of Monday morning) you are already back into an old pattern and you are disgusted and discouraged. Maybe you are driving home from work and you are saying, “God, I am such a screw-up! Here I go again! How can you NOT be mad at me? I am mad at me! I don’t see how I can be successful in ANYTHING if I can’t even be successful in this one little thing! Help me Lord!” I’ve been there too. Have you?
The good news is that God MAKES US NEW!! He is in the renewing and restoration business!! The Word tells us that He forgives us when we ask him (1 John 1:9). When we are saved, He makes us NEW creatures (2 Corinthians 5:17, Titus 3:5)! Brand new! But He goes further. He renews our spirits (2 Corinthians 4:16)! He renews our minds (Romans 12:2)! The Lord is all about FRESH! He wants to give you fresh anointing. He wants to give you FRESH joy and love and peace. The Word says His mercies are NEW EVERY MORNING! Not just on Sundays. Not the second Tuesday of every month. Every morning. This morning. Tomorrow morning. Even on Mondays. Even on bad days. Even after the bad days.
EVERY MORNING.
Without fail.
Always.
Lamentations 3:22-23 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
I also like how the Message Bible puts it: Lamentations 3:22-24 God’s loyal love couldn’t have run out, his merciful love couldn’t have dried up. They’re created new every morning. How great is your faithfulness! I’m sticking with God (I say it over and over). He’s all I’ve got left.
So if today was awful, that’s alright. Get alone with God and tell him about it. Give it to Him. Thank Him for His grace and his patience. Then go to sleep with a smile and a joyful heart, because, as Scarlett O’Hara says, “Tomorrow is another day!” His mercies are new every morning, and it’s a fresh opportunity! Get your head in the game! You can do this! As we like to say around here…”God don’t make junk.” You are his precious and beloved child. He doesn’t call you to do anything that he won’t equip you to handle (even when you FEEL unequipped). He is in the midst of the battle with you, so HOW CAN YOU LOSE?
His mercies are new every morning!
